Greywater |

20121114-173723.jpgThe biggest enviromental challenge that Jordan faces today is the scarcity of water. Jordan is the fourth water poorest country in the world, and water is currently being consumed at an unsustainable rate. The disappearance of the Dead Sea is a real threat, as its water level drops by more than one meter per year.  This is a clear testament to the current overuse of water in  agricultural, industrial, and domestic sectors, as well as a sign that we must change our lifestyle.

One way we can reduce water consumption is through a greywater system. We at Al Numeira have developed a fully operational greywater system that helps to recycle at least 50% of the total water consumption at our property. We would like to see this kind of system in every household and building in Jordan and the world! It is a very affordable and practical solution that allows you to both recycle water and grow flowers and food.

Our greywater system consists of a series of pipes that take the water from the kitchen sinks and the showers and bring it to five wells that we have dug in the garden. These wells also catch the rain in the winter. By concentrating water in these zones, we create fertile soil in which the roots of surrounding trees grow. In this post you can see more photos of the system.
